Penfolds Wines barossa valleyPenfolds in Australia began with the English physician Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844. Penfold began with vines planted just out of the South Australian city of Adelaide in Magill. The doctor produced sherry and port as he believed in the medicinal properties of fortified wines and used them on his patients.

The Penfolds vineyards expanded as their wines grew in popularity. It was in the 1940s that the company started to experiment with producing the table wines that the company is now famous for. At the time, much of the wine produced in Australia was fortified wine.

Australian winemaker Max Schubert played a major role in producing the famous Penfolds Grange wines, which were first called "Penfolds Grange Hermitage". Bottles of Grange are highly prized by wine collectors and connoisseurs, with large prices being paid at auction, particularly for the first experimental year of 1951 which can fetch more than $50,000 for one bottle.

"It's so essential that a winemaker give some of his personality to his wine. His personality is part and parcel of the wine itself. The greatest wines have implanted in them the ideas of the winemaker as to what they should be. His character is part of the wine." Max Schubert Quotes

The Penfolds label has been held by various companies and conglomerates over the years, including S.A. Brewing, Southcorp Wines, and now the Fosters Group company.

Penfolds has wineries in Magill and the Barossa Valley, with vineyards in Clare Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, Padthaway, Robe and Tumbarumba in New South Wales.
