Tyrrell's Vat 9 Shiraz

Company Description of the Wine..
First released in 1962 Vat 9 has been the flagship of the Tyrrell’s Shiraz production since that time. Sourced from the original vines on our Four and Eight Acre Blocks this wine is renowned for its rich peppery characteristics and longevity. The 4 Acres was planted in 1879 and the 8 Acres just prior to the turn of the century, and today they remain at 70% original vines. The soil is a heavy, rich volcanic clay with underlying limestone and good drainage.

Vat 9 Hunter Shiraz

Tasted in 2007
Alcohol : 12.8%
It may have been a challenging year for growing grapes in the Hunter Valley vineyards, but the 1997 vintage of the Vat 9 Hunter Shiraz came out just fine. At ten years of age the wine is drinking well. Tastes like a good Hunter Valley shiraz should, with plum, earth and spicy characters all evident.
AFW Rating : 96/100

Weather conditions for the year of 1997
Drought conditions were experienced prior to vintage and then the vintage itself was one of extremes with the weather changing on almost a daily basis. However the reds which were produced had exceptional color and flavor, with the strength and stability of acid that is necessary for bottle aging.

1997 Notes from Tyrrell's Wines - Winemaker Notes

1997 Notes from Tyrrell's Wines - Winemaker Notes..
"Made from 100% Hunter Shiraz picked in the later stages of the vintage when optimum sugar levels were attained. The wine was fermented in traditional hand plunged open vats and then matured in predominantly large (2250 litre) oak casks of which a large proportion was new wood. The newer casks have served to lift and freshen the fruit on the nose and palate rather than add any obvious characters of new wood. The balance of the wine, 20 percent, matured in 1 & 2 year old French oak barriques (225 litre capacity barrels)."
